This community based service engages young people aged 12-25 years with or at risk of severe mental illness in an environment which resonates with the young person and is underpinned by evidence based psychological interventions which utilises a comprehensive assessment and integrated service approach. The service uses early intervention strategies which engage the young person and their family to delay the progression to or prevent the need for ongoing engagement with adult mental health services.

The service will complement and link to existing activities such as general practitioners, specialist drug and alcohol and MH services, suicide prevention, social and emotional wellbeing services, and mainstream services.

The Mental Health Nurse will support people who use the Aboriginal Medical Services in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands. Within their scope of practice, they will assess all levels of mental illness and its impact on the life of the individual, their families, carers and community. Provides treatment that is gender specific, locally and culturally appropriate with developed client self-management plans and client directed recovery plans. They work alongside GPs and allied health professionals to provide a cohesive multidisciplinary approach to care and provide client /carer advocacy. This program reduces the likelihood of unnecessary hospital admission and readmission for people with mental illness. It assists in keeping ATSI people with mental illnesses well on country and feeling connected to the community by addressing unique barriers faced in this remote location including cross boundary care and after-hours services. In the absence of a GP, the Mental Health Nurse Practitioner can prescribe medication, within scope of practice, administer, monitor ensuring compliance. This program provides a stepped care approach and supports clients to transition up or down as their needs change.
